March 2024
Earth Month on the Horizon
Earth Month on the Horizon in Sun Prairie is a testament to the community's unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability. Led by Dr. Rose Daily, Sustainability Coordinator, community members are invited to participate in a variety of activities and events aimed at raising awareness about pressing environmental issues and fostering a deeper connection with nature. Dr. Daily has led the planning for a wide range of initiatives including waste reduction presentations, a group compost bin sale, and much more. The City's goal is to inspire and empower individuals to make meaningful contributions towards a greener, more sustainable future. Check out the interview with Dr. Daily to learn more about the exciting activities planned for Earth Month on the Horizon in Sun Prairie.
Wastewater Treatment Plant Installing Solar Arrays
We're thrilled to announce a significant step towards sustainability as the Wastewater Treatment Plant in Sun Prairie moves forward with the installation of solar arrays. This ambitious project, estimated at $839,696, will see the implementation of a 403 kW (DC) Ground Mounted Solar Array, generating approximately 519,096 kW of energy annually. Through strategic funding avenues such as the 2021 Energy Innovation Grant Program (EIGP) potentially reimbursing $59,000, the potential Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) offering $250,000, and an additional $50,000 rebate from Focus on Energy, this initiative is not only environmentally sound but also financially prudent. Led by Eagle Point Solar from Dubuque, IA, and designed by Strand Associates Inc from Madison, WI, the project is set to be fully operational by May 2024. This endeavor highlights the City's commitment to sustainable practices and positions Sun Prairie as a leader in renewable energy adoption.
Community Sponsorship for DEI Activities
In 2023, City Council passed a budget initiative to allocate funds for organizations in the community who are planning events, activities, and initiatives in line with the City's values of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Our commitment to advancing equity, honoring our diverse identity, and fostering an inclusive culture serves as the focus of our daily endeavors. We want to support others who are doing this work in the Sun Prairie community. Currently, there is $5,000 allocated available for this initiative. Click here to be redirected to the application.
Once your application is submitted, an internal team of staff will review and reach out to the email address provided to notify you of the application's status. Specific questions can be sent to Jake King, Communications & Diversity Strategist, at jking@cityofsunprairie.com.

Tourism Commission Now Under Chamber of Commerce Leadership
To ensure that the City can tap into its fullest tourism potential, the Tourism Commission is making a strategic move by partnering with the Chamber of Commerce. It's common practice for cities across Wisconsin to collaborate with either a Destination Marketing Organization or a Chamber of Commerce for tourism efforts. This move aligns with industry standards and ensures that Sun Prairie is equipped to compete effectively in the tourism market. City staff will be involved in a variety of ways such as providing essential administrative support to the Commission, offering insights and perspective during grant application review, development of a marketing plan, and more. With these efforts, the City is confident that Sun Prairie will shine bright as a tourist destination. We are grateful to the Sun Prairie Chamber of Commerce for their leadership!
You can also tune in to 103.5 The Sun every Wednesday at 7 a.m. to hear all the interviews.
