Pop Up Community Paint Project
This past spring, Dane Arts Mural Arts worked with students involved in Prairie Music & Arts programming at Community Schools sites (Westside, CH Bird, Patrick Marsh, Prairie Phoenix Academy) to create the design for a community mural that will be installed in Sheehan Park this fall.
The theme of the mural is inclusion, and the design is complete. We are inviting ALL community members to help to paint this mural. We will have two Pop Up Community Paint days next week - July 12 at Vandenberg and July 13 at Wetmore, 10am-1pm on both days.
We hope you can make it out to add some color to the mural!!

Meet Rohey Malick Lowe!
We are so honored and grateful for the opportunity we had last week to host a welcome reception for Rohey Malick Lowe Official, Mayoress of Banjul, The Gambia. Joining her in attendance were local Gambian community members. The conversation was centered on sharing strengths, struggles, and insights about each of our communities. We thank Representative Samba Baldeh for arranging this meeting.

2022 Sun Prairie Multicultural Fair
The Multicultural Fair is an event centered on honoring and celebrating the different cultures that live in Sun Prairie by bringing the community together for an experience of unique foods, performances, activities, and more.
The first annual event took place in 2019 out of the City’s desire to increase community programming that would bring Sun Prairie’s different identities together in celebration. The City collaborated with community members, leaders, and other partnering agencies for planning and development of the event. It is estimated that about 1000 persons attended the fair throughout the day.
The cultural celebration was converted into virtual programming in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Multicultural Fair Radio Reboot, which has now been transformed into "Sun Prairie Stories", a community storytelling podcast led by Sara Milweski at the Sun Prairie Media Center on 103.5 The Sun, replaced the in-person program with an hour-long radio show that celebrates a region of the world each month accompanied by an interview of a community leader sharing about that region.
The planning and implementation of this event is how the City continues its committment of advancing equity, honoring our diverse identity, and creating an inclusive culture. We are grateful for the community members and organizations that help make this event a reality every year.

Adventure Day is Back in Downtown Sun Prairie, Presented by the Business Improvement District!
The Sun Prairie Business Improvement District is pleased to announce that Adventure Day, an event to support Sunshine Place in memory of Sun Prairie Fire Captain Cory Barr, is coming back to Downtown Sun Prairie for its second year! The event is scheduled to take place on Thursday, July 14 from 2:30 – 7:00PM.
In early 2018, Cory Barr expressed his wish to hold a family-friendly event in Downtown Sun Prairie while also collecting donations for Sunshine Place - the local resource for community and social service support. Downtown Sun Prairie's Business Improvement District (BID) was made aware of Cory’s interest in holding an event that supported Sunshine Place, and voted to host Adventure Day to fulfill Cory's wish, and to honor his memory.
The event is designed as an access for everyone event, meaning that there is not a cost to participate. While this is a non-ticketed event, it is a fundraiser for Sunshine Place. There are several ways that event attendees can make a donation the day of the event: at the Bank of Sun Prairie or at The Piano Gal Shop, both of which are registration locations; at the Downtown Fire Station, the event’s end location; or at participating businesses that are hosting a donation bin located near their register. If you’re not able to attend the event, many Downtown Sun Prairie businesses are hosting a donation bin from now through the end of July.
“We are excited that Downtown Sun Prairie is once again hosting Adventure Day in the spirit of what Cory Barr envisioned to benefit Sunshine Place,” said Susan Schmidt, Director of Development at Sunshine Place. “The event is free, but we hope attendees will consider making a donation to support our organization's mission of providing food, clothing, housing assistance, and other vital services to those in need in Sun Prairie. We are grateful to the downtown businesses who have donated prizes and are planning activities to make this event a success and look forward to seeing families and individuals adventuring Downtown Sun Prairie while supporting a great cause.”
EVENT DETAILS:
1) Pick up your Adventure Day Map and Swag Bag (while supplies last) at one of the two registration stations the day of the event. Registration stations will be open from 2:30 – 6:30 PM at the Bank of Sun Prairie & at the Piano Gal Shop.
The Adventure Day Map includes a list of participating businesses and organizations, all located throughout Downtown Sun Prairie.
2) Choose the adventure/s you'd like to complete for a stamp on your map. Visit locations and follow instructions on how to receive a stamp on your Adventure Day Map.
Across many of the businesses you'll have the opportunity to try and find a "sunshine" image hidden at each stop. When you find it, you'll get a stamp on your Adventure Map.
Some locations may have special adventures awaiting you - seek & finds, coloring activities, arts and crafts, etc. and/or prizes and deals.
For each adventure you complete at a location, someone from the location will stamp your Adventure Map.
3) Turn in your Adventure Day Map at the Downtown Fire Station to review the prize packages available, and then enter for a chance to win!
All stamped Adventure Day Maps must be turned in at the Downtown Fire Station to be entered into the prize pool drawings. Adventure Day Maps must be received no later than 7:00PM on Thursday, July 14, 2022. Late entries will not be accepted. Prize winners will be notified at a later date with information about how to receive their prize!
All Downtown Sun Prairie events are designed to offer a variety of entertainment and engaging activities that hopefully appeals to a wide range of people. We hope that residents and visitors explore Downtown Sun Prairie before and after all of the events.

Adopt-A-Storm Drain Program
Participating in the Dane County Adopt-A-Storm Drain Program is a simple act that can help prevent localized flooding and keeps our lakes, rivers and streams clean. Storm drains help transport runoff from roofs, driveways, streets and other hard surfaces to underground pipes or storm sewers that eventually make their way to our lakes, rivers and streams. Unfortunately, that runoff also carries pollutants to our waters. Keeping storm drains clean can help protect our waters!
It’s easy! Here’s how it works.
- Adopt a nearby storm drain using the Dane County Adopt-A-Storm Drain App.
- Commit to safely cleaning the area on and around the adopted storm drain at least once a month, but preferably before every large rain event.
- Report the amount and type of debris after each cleaning using the Adopt- A-Storm Drain App.
- Report any spills/discharges washing down the storm drain.
All volunteers will be provided Storm Drain Cleaning Kit that includes: a safety vest, storm drain decal to place on their adopted storm drain, dust pan and broom, collection bucket and an Adopt-A-Storm Drain sticker to proudly display. Volunteers will also be included on our Adopt-A-Storm Drain e-Newsletter, which comes out 3-4 times/year. Adopt a local storm drain and have a Ripple Effect on area waters!

Radio Reboot
The City of Sun Prairie’s award-winning program, “Multicultural Fair: Radio Reboot,” will become “Sun Prairie Stories” at the Sun Prairie Media Center (SPMC) as a way to continue to tell the story of Sun Prairie’s growing community. The podcast will launch later this summer.
Due to the COVID-19 rates in 2020, the in-person Multicultural Fair was canceled and inspired the Radio Reboot. This was a way to offer programming that still celebrated the growing diversity of the Sun Prairie community while maintaining safety. The program focused on community members of diverse backgrounds. Sara Milewski, an SPMC volunteer, hosted the hour-long, monthly radio show and interviewed guests on their life stories and experiences. Guests also shared some of their favorite music and had an opportunity to promote a community service organization that reflected their culture. The eight-episode series concluded with the 2021 Multicultural Fair. The success of the Radio Reboot inspired the idea to start the new show, with a continued focus on the people who make Sun Prairie what it is today.
Sun Prairie Stories will offer participants an opportunity to record important parts of their lived story, with the support of a producer. The stories may be on a variety of topics about an individual's experiences. Those personal stories will be shared with the community as podcasts, on The Sun, 103.5FM, and online via the City website and social media platforms.
“I believe that it is our personal stories that make us who we are,” said Sara Milewski, SPMC Volunteer and producer of Sun Prairie Stories. “Sharing our stories helps us see the humanity in one another, and helps us better understand our community.”
Individuals of all ages and backgrounds are welcome to participate. For more information on how to participate, please visit the Sun Prairie Stories website at sunprairiemediacenter.com/sunprairiestories or contact Sara Milewski at sara.milewski@gmail.com.

Pianist Jerry Rabushka performs the original sheet music, while Isaac Cherry, playing a setup of Cajon, cymbal, and bell tree, adds a beat born of many different influences. Together they create a unique sound that makes this show a must-see!
**This performance will be held on the lawn outside the Youth Services area of the building, so feel free to bring blankets or your lawn chairs! In the case of inclement weather, it will take place in the Community Room. Generously funded by the Friends of the Sun Prairie Public Library.

Sun Prairie Utilities Budget Billing Program
Many of us have higher utility bills during the summer and winter months and lower bills during the spring and fall due to the cooling and heating of our homes. These unknown fluctuations can make household budgeting difficult, if this sounds familiar to you, then SPU Budget Billing might be good for you.
With Sun Prairie Utilities’ Budget Billing program, we try to even out your utility costs over the course of a year. We will estimate what your future costs will be (based on your latest 12-month usage) and then require a fixed payment amount for 11 months of the budget year. This fixed payment will make your household budgeting a little easier; knowing what amount your monthly utility bill payment will be. The last month of the budget cycle is billed for the actual balance of your SPU account and is used as a true-up for the end of the budget cycle. Budget amounts are set at the beginning of a budget cycle and are reviewed at six months to verify the budget amount will adequately cover all costs billed during the budget cycle.
If you are already on SPU Budget Billing, you should review your bill and confirm that any automatic payments are scheduled correctly for new annual rates. If you are interested in finding out what your budget billing payments would be email information@myspu.org.
Sun Prairie Utilities is Participating in a Voluntary PFAS Sampling Program.
Sun Prairie Utilities takes pride in providing high-quality, safe drinking water that meets regulatory standards. Wisconsin and states nationwide face challenges related to identifying and managing Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in their water supplies.
PFAS compounds have been manufactured for use in everyday items such as nonstick cookware, water-resistant clothing, and personal care products and have been widely used in firefighting foams, in industrial applications, and at military installations. Currently, there is no federal regulation governing PFAS in drinking water. Still, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Wisconsin Department of
Natural Resources (WI DNR) have made preliminary recommendations and are conducting research to determine the appropriate standards for municipal water supplies.
There are up to 5,000 chemicals that are classified as PFAS. Studies have examined possible relationships between levels of PFAS in blood and harmful health effects in people. PFAS persist in the environment and the human body for long periods of time. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WI DNR) is conducting a voluntary statewide investigation into 18 PFAS compounds in municipal water supplies. Sun Prairie Utilities chose to participate in this voluntary sampling for PFAS to proactively assess the potential impacts of PFAS in the municipal drinking water.
Sun Prairie Utilities submitted samples in June 2022 to the DNR voluntary sampling program from all active well locations in the City of Sun Prairie. All samples tested below recommended levels set by the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, in fact, in 124 of the 126 tests conducted no PFAS were detected (zero, or at levels below test sensitivity.) Information on the testing results can be found online at https://www.sunprairieutilities.com/pfas-sampling.
