Recap of Sun Prairie Utilities Groundbreaking

Sun Prairie Utilities recently broke ground for its future operations facility on Linnerud Drive. Sun Prairie Utilities (SPU) has been in downtown Sun Prairie for over 50 years. Its current location has undergone a few expansions to reach the current 29,000 square feet, but the facility can no longer sufficiently meet the space demands required to serve our rapidly growing city.

The new operations facility has several benefits for both staff and the community. These include an all-electric facility, electric vehicle charging, enhanced security, improved energy efficiency, geothermal HVAC, rooftop solar, a large community  room, bulk fill water station, and conveniently located across from the utility’s inventory storage yard.

The groundbreaking ceremony was held where the community can expect to find the future operations facility at 510 Linnerud Drive on Thursday, July 11, 2024.

Check out the interview with Rick Wicklund, Utility Manager, about details regarding the new facility and more! The Big (8)

No Mow May Impact Report

No Mow May is a conservation initiative that encourages property owners to limit lawn mowing during May to provide early-season foraging resources for spring-emerging pollinators, especially in urban areas with limited resources. The City of Sun Prairie is excited to offer its residents the opportunity to participate in the 2024 No Mow May program.

Sun Prairie Road Conditions Ranked for Quality

Roads may not be top of mind for everyone, but did you know that the City of Sun Prairie ranks third for road quality among the 25 largest municipalities in Wisconsin? According to the Wisconsin Policy Forum's assessment of road conditions, Sun Prairie has a lower share of "Poor" and "Failed" roads compared to other municipalities.

The report states that from 2010 to 2023, the percentage of local roads in Wisconsin rated as excellent or very good decreased by 9.5 percentage points. During the same period, the share of roads rated as good or fair increased by 6.9 percentage points, and there was a slight rise in roads rated as poor or worse.

Although local roads in Wisconsin are generally still in good condition, this decline is concerning. Local roads are essential for their communities and connect to the broader highway system. Road quality affects motorists' commute times, vehicle wear and tear, and safety.

The City appreciates the Public Works staff for their efforts in maintaining high-quality roads! Check out the full report here

Sun Prairie Solar Array Unveiling

On Thursday, July 25 a press conference was held to unveil the solar array at the Wastewater Treatment Facility.

This array, boasting a capacity of 403 kilowatts DC, has been operational since early May. As of today, it has already generated an impressive 156,000 kilowatt-hours of clean energy.

Contributions totaling approximately $340,000 have been secured for the project, including $20,000 from WPPI Energy and Sun Prairie Utilities, $40,000 from Focus on Energy, and roughly $284,000 allocated through the Federal Inflation Reduction Act's clean energy elective pay.

Thanks to the strong collaboration and persistence of staff, alongside the support of our elected officials, the City is confidently on track to achieve our goal of 100% renewable electricity for municipal operations by 2025.

2024 Bicycle Friendly Community Survey

The League of American Bicyclists is conducting an annual national census of Americans’ experiences and perceptions of riding a bike in different communities across the U.S.

This year, nearly 100 communities submitted applications to the League’s Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC) program, and we especially want to hear from people who are familiar with biking (or wanting to bike) in those communities as part of our review process. Your input will help the League and applicant communities to better understand current bicycling conditions and potential areas for improvement.

If your community did not apply to the BFC program in 2024, we still encourage you to tell us about biking there – your feedback can help us identify national trends and establish a baseline around how safe, comfortable, and convenient it is to ride a bike in the U.S. We can also use this local input to encourage your community to participate in the BFC program in the future.

This survey should take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete, and nearly all questions are optional. Aggregate survey responses will be shared anonymously with each applicant community as part of their BFC Feedback Report later this year.bicycle survey
