Conduct Historical Research

The Sun Prairie Historical Library and Museum holds archival records, manuscripts, maps, rare books, photographs, and other materials that document the history of Sun Prairie. Due to the unique and often fragile condition of Museum collections, these materials are non-circulating and their permanent storage areas are closed to researchers. While the use of certain materials may be restricted, most of the Museum's archival materials are accessible for research purposes in accordance with Museum procedures.

Research materials date from the 1840s into the 2020s. A Summary of Research Collections provides general information about some of the Museum's available research materials.

  • Researchers are encouraged to explore the Museum's History Online page for digitally available resources. The SPHLM Collections Database provides the best way to search the collections.

  • Document/image reproduction services are currently unavailable.

  • Researchers are asked to submit a Research Request Form so that Museum staff can respond to your inquiry and/or help identify materials that are relevant for your research project.

  • Physical access to research materials is provided at the Museum by appointment only. At your scheduled visit, you will be required to complete and sign a Research Rules and Registration Form.
