Other Ways to Get Involved & Take Action

  • Spring Roll Eco-Transit Challenge
    • This fun, free initiative encourages people who live and work in Dane County to swap solo drives for biking, riding the bus, walking, rolling, and carpooling more often—and celebrates those already choosing sustainable transportation year-round. Click here to learn more & register to log trips.
  • Learn About Leaf Free Streets
    • Did you know leaves that collect on our streets every fall can harm our waters? More than 50% of the annual amount of phosphorus in urban stormwater can come from leaves in the street! When it rains, stormwater flows through leaf piles in streets creating a “leaf tea” that is rich in dissolved phosphorus. This "leaf tea" travels through storm sewers making its way to our lakes, rivers and streams. Too much phosphorus can lead to toxic algae blooms, low oxygen levels and green murky waters, none of which are good for animals living in the water or those of us who use it for recreation. Earth Month in Sun Prairie

Earth Day is annually held on April 22 to demonstrate and promote environmental awareness through a variety of efforts and initiatives. In Sun Prairie, we have turned this day into a whole month of pledges, initiatives, and community activities centered around a theme. We have provided many opportunities to not only protect and preserve our area but also build community while doing this work.

What is Earth Day?

Earth Day originated in 1970 as a dedicated day of education and engagement about environmental issues. It takes place annually on April 22 and is observed in a variety of ways depending on the organization or community recognizing it. Many communities use this time to organize park cleanups, fundraise for different environmentally friendly initiatives, embed sustainable practices into the community, and more. In the 1990s, recognition of this day surpassed North American borders with over 140 nations beginning to place activities and events to celebrate the cause. Curious to learn more about the history of Earth Day? Check out our Sustainable Sun Prairie podcast episode "Earth Day Celebration".
