Residential Compost Pilot

The City of Sun Prairie is excited to launch its Food RESCU Residential Composting Pilot! This 18-month pilot will provide 150 Sun Prairie households (renters included!) with a curbside composting service for a subsidized rate of $10/month. All participating households will receive a 4-gallon bucket to collect food scraps. On a biweekly basis, Green Box Compost, the pilot's composting service provider, will stop by participating homes and swap full buckets for a clean bucket. Participating households will also receive finished compost twice throughout the pilot. In order for the city to gather valuable feedback on the success of the pilot, all participating households will be required to fill out feedback surveys twice during the pilot.

Get Started:

1. Watch this 5-minute video providing an overview of the Residential Composting Pilot. Note: watching this video is required for sign up.

2. Sign up for the pilot here: https://www.withgreenbox.com/residential.

3. Pick up your 4-gallon food scrap bucket at the June 28th Sun Prairie Farmer's Market OR wait for your bucket to be delivered to your home (on or around July 1st).

4. Fill your bucket with food scraps. Your first bucket swap will occur on July 8th. Following this, bucket swaps will occur every other week.

5. Complete the required feedback surveys that will be distributed twice throughout the pilot. The surveys will be sent directly to your email.

Sun Prairie Food RESCU Pilot

The Sun Prairie Food RESCU (residential, event, & school compost undertaking) Pilot is a comprehensive program designed to test city-wide solutions to food waste. The Pilot consists of four main components:

  • RESIDENTIAL PILOT 150 households will have the opportunity to receive curbside composting service for a subsidized rate of $10/month for a total of 18-months. Open to both single family and multi-family households!

  • EVENT COMPOSTING All major 2025 city-wide events will feature custom waste stations that include a food waste composting disposal option. The waste stations will be managed by volunteers who will assist attendees in sorting their waste. Events that will feature these waste stations include Concerts in the Park, Juneteenth, Pridefest, Sustainability Fair, Multicultural Fair, and Trunk or Treat.

  • SCHOOL DISTRICT COMPOSTING Three Sun Prairie Schools will pilot lunchroom composting during the 2025-2026 school year. These schools will also receive share tables and participate in a food waste reduction competition. Food waste education will also be incorporated into the science curriculum.

  • URBAN FARM & COMMUNITY GARDEN SUPPORT A majority of the compost produced through this pilot will be donated to local community gardens and urban farms. Local gardeners and farmers will also be invited to participate in a 2026 Urban Farm Educational Workshop to share knowledge and learn about best practices.
